Several ferry routes arrive directly in the region, allowing you to avoid the longer drive from Calais while still benefiting from relatively short crossing times. For most travellers, the main choices are Portsmouth-Caen, Portsmouth-Cherbourg and Newhaven-Dieppe. Which route is best depends largely on whether you are heading to eastern or western Normandy.

Our experience

We sailed overnight from Portsmouth to Cherbourg on Brittany Ferries’ Santoña, and this was one of those crossings where the ferry genuinely made the journey easier. The cabins were comfortable, the ship felt modern, and the children were not tied to their seats for hours: they could move around, explore and wind down before bed. Sleeping through the crossing meant we arrived in Cherbourg well rested and ready to continue through France.

Onboard experience

The Normandy routes offer a different onboard experience from the short Dover crossings. The ships are generally larger and the crossings longer, allowing space for restaurants, bars, lounges, shops and outdoor decks. Overnight sailings also feature private cabins, making them popular with travellers who want to maximise their time in France. While facilities vary by vessel, the Normandy routes are often seen as a good middle ground between the short Channel crossings and the longer sailings to Brittany or Spain.

Why travellers choose Normandy

  • Several direct ferry arrivals within the region.
  • Shorter crossings than Brittany.
  • Popular with campers, cyclists and road trippers.
  • Easy access to Paris and northern France.

By car

One of Normandy’s biggest advantages is its proximity to southern England. Most destinations can be reached within a relatively short drive after arrival.
