Ferry from Dover to Calais
Dover – Calais remains the benchmark Channel crossing. We’ve sailed with all three ferry operators on the route – P&O Ferries, DFDS and Irish Ferries – and have also compared them with LeShuttle through the Channel Tunnel. The crossing itself takes only around 90 minutes, but the real advantage is flexibility. With frequent departures throughout the day, competitive fares and easy access to mainland Europe, Dover – Calais is often the route against which every other Channel crossing is measured.

Ferry services from Dover to Calais
P&O Ferries, DFDS and Irish Ferries all operate the Dover – Calais route, giving travellers a choice of schedules, prices and onboard facilities. Crossings typically take around 90 minutes, with sailings running throughout the day and night. Cars, motorhomes, caravans, motorcycles and foot passengers are all accepted, although facilities and foot passenger procedures vary slightly between operators.

Onboard experience
We’ve crossed Dover – Calais with all three operators and found that the differences are smaller than many travellers expect. All offer restaurants or cafes, indoor lounges, outdoor deck space and duty-free shopping. The crossing is short enough that most passengers spend the time grabbing a meal, stretching their legs and enjoying the views. On clear days, watching the White Cliffs of Dover disappear behind you – or reappear on the return crossing – remains one of the highlights of the journey.
From Calais into France and mainland Europe
Calais is one of the best-connected ports in Europe. Paris, Lille, Belgium and the Netherlands are all within easy reach, while the French motorway network makes it a convenient starting point for journeys further south. For many travellers, Calais is not the destination but the gateway to the rest of Europe.
By car
If you’re travelling by car, this is often the simplest and most flexible Channel crossing available. The high frequency of departures means you can often choose a sailing that matches your schedule rather than planning your day around the ferry. Just remember that the 90-minute crossing is only part of the journey. Driving to Dover, check-in, border controls and onward driving all add to the total travel time.

The short crossing means you’re back on the road quickly, while the wide choice of departures gives flexibility if travel plans change.
