The Portsmouth – Caen ferry is one of the most popular routes between the UK and France, and for good reason. Arriving in Ouistreham puts you right in the heart of Normandy, close to Bayeux, the D-Day beaches and the road towards Paris. We actually had this crossing booked ourselves, but after a car breakdown we needed to change our plans at short notice. By then, every sailing to Caen was already full, forcing us to switch to Cherbourg instead. That experience alone says a lot about how popular this route has become. If Normandy is your destination, this is often the crossing many travellers try to book first.

Our experience
We sailed overnight from Portsmouth to Cherbourg on Brittany Ferries’ Santoña, and this was one of those crossings where the ferry genuinely made the journey easier. The cabins were comfortable, the ship felt modern, and the children were not tied to their seats for hours: they could move around, explore and wind down before bed. Sleeping through the crossing meant we arrived in Cherbourg well rested and ready to continue through France.

Portsmouth – Caen combines a relatively short crossing with the facilities of a modern cruise ferry. Depending on the sailing, you’ll find restaurants, bars, lounges and cabins, making it easy to relax during the journey. If you’re planning a classic Normandy road trip, this is often one of the most logical arrival points.
By car
This is arguably one of the best ferry routes for travellers bringing a car. You arrive directly in central Normandy and avoid the longer drive from Calais. The route is particularly attractive for holidays focused on Normandy, Paris, Brittany or western France. Because sailings can fill up quickly during busy periods, booking well in advance is often worthwhile.

By campervan
Portsmouth-Caen is extremely popular with campervan and motorhome travellers. Normandy offers excellent campsites, historic attractions and scenic coastal routes, making it a natural first stop for many touring holidays. Brittany Ferries also regularly offers motorhome promotions outside peak season, although availability can disappear quickly on this popular route.
