Ferries from Portsmouth to Normandy
Portsmouth offers three different ferry routes into Normandy: Caen, Cherbourg and Le Havre. While they all arrive in northern France, the best choice depends entirely on where you’re heading afterwards. Caen is usually the most popular all-round option for Normandy and the D-Day beaches. Cherbourg works particularly well for western Normandy, Brittany and longer journeys into western France. Le Havre is the closest ferry arrival point to Paris and often makes the most sense for eastern Normandy and inland France. Choosing the right port can save several hours of driving over the course of a trip.

Our experience
We sailed overnight from Portsmouth to Cherbourg on Brittany Ferries’ Santoña, and this was one of those crossings where the ferry genuinely made the journey easier. The cabins were comfortable, the ship felt modern, and the children were not tied to their seats for hours: they could move around, explore and wind down before bed. Sleeping through the crossing meant we arrived in Cherbourg well rested and ready to continue through France.

Brittany Ferries operates all Portsmouth – Normandy crossings, serving Caen (Ouistreham), Cherbourg and Le Havre. Depending on the route and season, you’ll find a mix of daytime and overnight sailings. All routes accept cars, motorhomes, motorcycles, bicycles and foot passengers.

Onboard experience
All three Portsmouth – Normandy routes operate on Brittany Ferries cruise ferries, offering restaurants, bars, lounges and cabins on overnight departures. The overall onboard experience is broadly similar, so for most travellers the arrival port matters far more than the ship itself. The main decision is not which ferry is nicest, but which Normandy arrival point best matches your destination.
Choosing the right arrival point in Normandy
Caen (Ouistreham) is best positioned for Bayeux, the D-Day beaches, Caen itself and onward travel towards Paris. Cherbourg works particularly well for the Cotentin Peninsula, western Normandy, Mont Saint-Michel and Brittany. Le Havre provides easy access to Rouen, Honfleur, Étretat and Paris, making it the strongest option for eastern Normandy and the Seine Valley.
By car
If you’re travelling by car, choosing the correct arrival port can make a bigger difference than the crossing itself. For most Normandy holidays, Caen is the easiest all-round choice. Drivers heading west towards Brittany often benefit from arriving in Cherbourg, while Le Havre usually works best for Paris, Rouen and eastern France.

By campervan
Motorhome travellers often favour Caen and Cherbourg because they provide quick access to Normandy’s coastal touring routes, campsites and historic attractions. Le Havre can work well for longer journeys towards Paris and eastern France, but is generally less popular as a touring base than western Normandy.
