Our experience
We sailed overnight from Portsmouth to Cherbourg on Brittany Ferries’ Santoña, and this was one of those crossings where the ferry genuinely made the journey easier. The cabins were comfortable, the ship felt modern, and the children were not tied to their seats for hours: they could move around, explore and wind down before bed. Sleeping through the crossing meant we arrived in Cherbourg well rested and ready to continue through France.

Portsmouth – Le Havre is operated as a comfortable cruise-ferry crossing rather than a quick hop across the Channel. On board you’ll find restaurants, bars, lounges and cabins, making the journey feel considerably more relaxed than the shorter Dover routes. Overnight sailings allow passengers to rest before arriving in Normandy, while daytime departures provide time to enjoy the facilities and sea views. As with other Brittany Ferries crossings, the car deck is closed during the voyage, so take anything you need into your cabin or day bag before departure.
From Le Havre to Paris and Normandy
Le Havre is ideally positioned for eastern Normandy and Paris. Rouen is around an hour away, while Paris can be reached in roughly two hours by car. The attractive harbour town of Honfleur is just across the Seine estuary, and the famous cliffs of Étretat are also within easy reach. For travellers heading inland, the route provides straightforward access to the French motorway network and eastern France.
By car
If you’re driving towards Paris, Rouen, Champagne or eastern France, Portsmouth – Le Havre is often one of the most direct ferry options available. Arriving further south than Calais reduces motorway mileage and allows you to continue inland quickly. For road trips focused on Paris and eastern Normandy, this route is often the strongest alternative to the Dover crossings.
