Ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff
The Plymouth – Roscoff ferry is the south west’s direct gateway to Brittany. For travellers from Devon, Cornwall, Wales and the west of England, it saves the long drive east to Portsmouth or Dover and lands you straight in the region. Daytime crossings can take around five to seven hours, while overnight sailings turn the journey into useful rest time. If you’re starting in the far west and heading for Brittany, this is usually the most time-efficient route by sea.

Our experience
We sailed from Saint-Malo to Portsmouth with Brittany Ferries as a family, and this day crossing felt much more like part of the holiday than just transport. Saint-Malo is a brilliant place to leave from, the views on departure are beautiful, and there was enough on board to keep the children busy during the crossing. It is not the fastest way to England, but if you are travelling from Brittany or western France, it is a relaxed and very logical route Between the UK and France.

The route is served by Armorique and Pont-Aven, with passengers able to travel by car, caravan, motorhome, bicycle or as foot passengers. Day sailings can be relatively quick, while overnight crossings are best treated as a night of travel rather than just a ferry ride.

Plymouth – Roscoff operates on Brittany Ferries’ comfortable cruise ferries, including Armorique and Pont-Aven. On board you’ll find restaurants, bars, lounges, shops and cabins, while daytime sailings offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sea views and watch the Brittany coastline gradually appear. Overnight crossings allow travellers to sleep on board and arrive rested the following morning. Even on daytime sailings, a cabin can be a worthwhile upgrade for families or anyone wanting a quiet place to relax.
From Roscoff into Brittany and western France
Roscoff is well placed for exploring Brittany. Morlaix, Brest, Quimper, Concarneau and the Pink Granite Coast are all natural onward destinations, while Saint-Malo is around two hours away by car. The route also works for longer trips towards the Loire Valley and western France. If your holiday is focused on Brittany rather than Normandy or Paris, Roscoff is often the most logical arrival port.
By car
This route makes most sense with a car if you live in Devon, Cornwall, Wales or the west of England. You avoid the long drive across southern England to Portsmouth or Dover and arrive directly in Brittany. For western France, it can reduce total driving time and make the first day of the trip feel much easier.

By campervan
Plymouth – Roscoff is a strong route for campervan and motorhome travellers. Brittany is well suited to touring, with coastal campsites, smaller towns and scenic roads within easy reach of Roscoff. As with most ferry routes, book early in peak season because vehicle deck space for larger vehicles can fill up. On overnight sailings, pack a small bag for the cabin because you will not normally be able to return to the vehicle deck once the ship is at sea.
