You board in Portsmouth in the evening, settle into your cabin and wake up in Normandy the next morning. Border checks can sometimes take a little time after arrival, but you’re already much further south than if you had crossed via Dover. For Normandy, Brittany, the Loire Valley and western France, it’s a comfortable and efficient way to start your trip.

Our experience
We sailed overnight from Portsmouth to Cherbourg on Brittany Ferries’ Santoña, and this was one of those crossings where the ferry genuinely made the journey easier. The cabins were comfortable, the ship felt modern, and the children were not tied to their seats for hours: they could move around, explore and wind down before bed. Sleeping through the crossing meant we arrived in Cherbourg well rested and ready to continue through France.

Onboard experience
We sailed overnight on Brittany Ferries’ Santoña, boarding relatively late in Portsmouth before heading straight to our cabin. On board you’ll find restaurants, bars, lounges, a cinema and children’s play areas, making the crossing feel more like a moving hotel than a ferry. One thing we particularly liked was that children are free to move around and explore rather than being tied to a seat for hours. By the time we woke up the next morning, France was already coming into view.
From Cherbourg into Normandy and beyond
Cherbourg is one of the best arrival ports for exploring Normandy. The D-Day beaches, Bayeux, Caen and the Cotentin Peninsula are all within easy reach. Mont Saint-Michel is also a popular onward destination, while Brittany, the Loire Valley and western France can be reached without first driving across northern France. For many travellers, arriving in Cherbourg means their French road trip effectively starts the moment they leave the port.
By car
Portsmouth – Cherbourg works particularly well for drivers heading to Normandy, Brittany, the Loire Valley or western France. By arriving directly in Normandy, you avoid a significant amount of motorway driving compared with crossing via Dover. For longer road trips, that can make a noticeable difference to both mileage and travel fatigue.
