Poole – Cherbourg is Brittany Ferries’ shortest crossing to France and one of the most convenient routes for travellers in Dorset and along the central south coast of England. Instead of driving west to Portsmouth or east to Dover, you can board in Poole and arrive in Normandy in under five hours. It is a particularly attractive option if you want a daytime crossing, a simpler port experience and quick access to the Cotentin Peninsula, western Normandy and Brittany.

Our experience
We sailed overnight from Portsmouth to Cherbourg on Brittany Ferries’ Santoña, and this was one of those crossings where the ferry genuinely made the journey easier. The cabins were comfortable, the ship felt modern, and the children were not tied to their seats for hours: they could move around, explore and wind down before bed. Sleeping through the crossing meant we arrived in Cherbourg well rested and ready to continue through France.

Onboard experience
Poole – Cherbourg is a relatively short daytime cruise-ferry crossing, but it still offers more on board than a simple shuttle. Sailings on Barfleur include a self-service restaurant, bar, boutique shop, reserved lounge seating, children’s play area and even cabins if you want a private space to rest during the crossing. It is not a flashy ship, but it feels practical, compact and easy – a good fit for travellers who want a proper ferry without committing to an overnight sailing.
From Cherbourg into Normandy and western France
Cherbourg works well as a gateway to the Cotentin Peninsula, the Normandy coast and western France. Bayeux, the D-Day beaches and Mont Saint-Michel are all realistic onward destinations, while Brittany is also within easy reach if you are continuing further west. It is not the best port for Paris, but it can be a very useful arrival point for western Normandy road trips.
By car
This is a strong route if you are travelling by car from Dorset, Hampshire or the central south coast and want to avoid a longer drive to Portsmouth or Dover. Arriving in Cherbourg also makes sense if your trip is focused on western Normandy, Brittany or a longer drive south through western France. If your destination is Paris or eastern Normandy, Caen or Le Havre may be more logical.

By campervan
Poole – Cherbourg works well for campervan and motorhome travellers because it is relatively short, easy to board and lands you directly in a region that suits touring. Normandy’s coast, the Cotentin Peninsula and Brittany are all within easy reach, and the daytime schedule can be convenient if you prefer not to drive straight off an overnight ferry.
