How to travel from Bournemouth to France by ferry?

Bournemouth is a medium-sized city with a long coastline. Thanks to its extensive beach, Bournemouth is a popular destination among tourists. However, despite its approximately 200,000 residents, you might expect a port here, but it is located in the neighbouring town of Poole.

Poole is much smaller as a town, but unlike Bournemouth, it has a natural bay, making it an ideal location for a (protected) harbour.

So, if you want to take a ferry from Bournemouth to France, for instance, to the nearby port of Cherbourg, you first need to head to the port area in Poole. From here, two ferry services operate to Cherbourg and St. Malo.

Ferry departures also available from Portsmouth

Portsmouth is also nearby. About 30 miles as the crow flies from Bournemouth, you’ll find the (large) port of Portsmouth. This is an excellent alternative, as it also offers many sailings to France. From here, you can travel to St. Malo and Cherbourg. Additionally, ferries depart from Portsmouth to Caen and Le Havre in Normandy. Almost all crossings in this large urban region are operated by Brittany Ferries.
